Big news (at least for me): I stepped down as LeadCrunch’s CEO and resigned from the board of directors on January 6, 2021.

LeadCrunch Team Celebrating Closing Series A on February 28, 2018

Every sports team eventually needs a new head coach. Now is the time for me to move on.

Founding and leading LeadCrunch as its Chief Executive Officer was the most rewarding experience of my career. I am incredibly grateful to all of my colleagues, investors, and customers. Hard work has never been as much fun.

The board and I are very proud of my accomplishments at LeadCrunch. The credit for any company is more about the team’s…

My father, Olin Volney Hyde, approved this message before he died.

He gave me 2 minutes for his eulogy. I wrote the following letter to him before his death on May 26, 2019.

It’s longer than 2 minutes. So, in death as in life, my father forgives my defiance one last time.

Our last meal together. March 24, 2019

Dear Dad:

The words on this page, like the chapters in our lives, have gone through many changes.

You wrote letters to me at the big moments of my life. When I was 12, fighting for my life in a hospital bed. At 30, when we danced with…

What Grad Schools Must Teach to Foster Sustainable Innovation

The following is a curriculum that I wish I could have studied in a formal masters program. It would have saved me from several very expensive failures.

I submitted this to the director of the Master’s program in Architecture-based Enterprise Systems Engineering at UC San Diego after one of my thesis advisors asked me “What would be the ideal degree for a CEO?” Soon thereafter Pranav Raj, who is my chief of staff at LeadCrunch, asked the same question.

Here’s the synthesis of what I’ve learned from both my graduate degree and the more rigorous school of hard knocks of…

Who are The Tribe of Insurgents?

The Tribe of Insurgents is a peer mentoring group of founders and CEOs of rapidly growing startups. It is invitation-only, membership is private and our only agenda is to help each other create massively profitable companies.

The idea to create The Tribe came to me after speaking with, Laura Bilazarian, CEO and founder of Teamable. We are both tenants in Jason Lemkin’s SaaStr CoSelling Space in San Francisco. Laura is a fantastic CEO. She told…

I’ll be one of the judges at the IGNITE Quick Pitch Competition on February 24, 2017 at UCSD. We want the best possible pitches. One team will win $10,000. Here’s how to win the money:

Write a script. Memorize it. Rehearse it. Polish it until it is second nature to you. Record yourself on your phone then be your own harsh critic. Time goes quick. Plan every second.

Start with the elevator pitch as the basis for your script. Cover each of the following:

  • For (target customers)
  • Who are dissatisfied with (the current market alternative)
  • Our product is a (new…

A selfie of Senator John McCain with me at the Phoenix airport.

This article originally posted on LinkedIn.

Phoenix airport was packed. It was Monday November 9, 2015 and I arrived to the gate to learn my connecting flight to Washington DC was delayed.

There was only one empty seat in the gate area. It was next to Senator John McCain. He sat very much alone. I couldn’t tell if people didn’t recognize him or if they just didn’t care. Few stared but no one talked.

I couldn’t resist.

“Hi Senator. Do you mind if I sit next to you?”

“Sure, if you don’t mind being seen with me.”

Stunning that in…

Leading a startup is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. Although I’ve done it eight times, starting a business doesn’t get easier with experience. Yes, it gets less scary. But it is always harder because markets, technology and knowledge all evolve faster than individuals can learn or adapt. Teams become increasingly important as innovation accelerates every aspect of our lives.

For the past two years, I’ve been building and leading an amazing team of experts in sales, marketing and artificial intelligence. Our innovation is LeadCrunch: an entirely new approach for B2B sales. I like to think about…
